This is Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. But I think this is technically considered Fort Macon, originally built after the war of 1812, to protect the Beaufort inlet from attack by sea after plunderings by the Brits and Spainiards. The infamous Black Beard [a pirate] is said to have sunk very near this point, but I have not seen the ship. There is a terrific area of giant sand dunes complete with grasses and a large community of very small sand toads [bufo quercicus] that you kind of have to watch out for so you dont step on them in the fall when it starts to cool down. Especially in the cool moisture of pre dawn. You can listen to their little call here:
